All-Natural Cleaning Tips for Your Kitchen

Regatta at Lake Lynn KitchenNext time you need to clean your kitchen, don’t spend money on powerful cleaning products that contain harmful toxins and chemicals that could be making you sick. Instead, use these tips to learn how to clean your kitchen without having to resort to using toxic cleaning products.

Make Kitchen Drains Smell Lemony Fresh

Each time you wash the dishes, food particles and other gunk start to build up in the drain of your sink. Over time, a horrible smell will start to fill your kitchen. Luckily, it is extremely easy to fix.

If you have a garbage disposal, take one or two fresh lemons and cut them up into squares. If you don’t have a garbage disposal, you can squeeze the lemons and use the juice. Toss the lemon squares or juice into the sink followed by some baking soda then run some warm water down the sink for a minute or two and the smell will be gone.

Grab the Baking Soda and Clean Your Sinks

Baking soda is an amazing, all-natural product that can be used to remove dirt, grease, and just about anything else from around your kitchen sink. To create a cleaning product that will make your sink sparkle and shine, all you have to do is mix a little bit of baking soda with water. Put the mixture on a sponge and clean away.

This cleaning tip also works great for cleaning kitchen counters and stovetops.

Clean the Often Forgotten Microwave

Stop spending time scraping and scrubbing the walls of your microwave in an effort to remove built-up food and unidentifiable gunk. Quickly clean your microwave with this all-natural microwave cleaner.

To create the all-natural microwave cleaner do the following:

  • Put a ½ cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl
  • Slice up a lemon and put it in the bowl with the water
  • Microwave for 3 minutes then let the water sit for 5 minutes

The kitchens in our apartments in Raleigh, North Carolina, are great places to try these cleaning tips. Call our office to learn more about our wonderful apartment community and to schedule a tour.

Tea With Lemon

Stock Up on These Spring Teas

Tea With LemonAs the weather starts to heat up, it might be time to put the coffee down. Winter is a time to cordon yourself off from the rest of the world, but spring is the time to come out and play. And what better way to enjoy that beautiful breeze than with a fresh glass or mug of the following springtime teas?

Pu-erh

There’s a bit of an art to teas that an average drinker may not understand. Pu-erh is from China that has a tendency to taste better when it’s had a little time to develop its personality. Leaves that are only a few years old are on the bittersweet side, while those that are 10 to 20 years old have a tendency to taste like an earthy pick-me-up. Ideally, you should be drinking pu-erh that is 100 years old, but that could be difficult to find. Regardless, this tea is enjoyable to drink.

Jasmine

The flowers of jasmine combine to make this very floral brew that’s perfect for those gorgeous spring nights ahead of you. Jasmine is known to soothe the drinker of their anxieties, and it can also potentially reduce the severity of common bodily disorders such as headaches or skin inflammation. Jasmine is usually a type of green tea that is enhanced with the precious flower and traditionally made in Asia. Light and bright in flavor, you’re encouraged to drink this right before a big meeting at work.

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric is known for its healing properties which can make this tea a health drink as well as a treat. It’s a little spicy, a little sweet, and full of deliciousness. The plant has been hailed for its antioxidant properties, which can help to slow down the aging process and increase the body’s immune system. Try it out on a warm day with some honey and lemon to put a fresh spring in your step.

Sipping tea in our apartments in Raleigh is just one way to celebrate the change of seasons, but it’s certainly not the only way. If you’re looking for an apartment that can keep up with your many plans throughout the year, consider touring Regatta at Lake Lynn. Our apartments and amenities are second to none, so come see which of our floor plans are currently available today!

Plants to Grow in Your Bedroom

Aloe Vera PlantIf you are a community member who has tried to grow plants in your bedrooms but can’t seem to find your green thumb, don’t despair! You might have been trying to grow “outside” plants “inside” or didn’t realize the plants you chose required copious amounts of sunlight. To make living in our Raleigh apartments feel more like you are living in a lush, green forest, here are some plants anybody can grow in their bedroom with just a little bit of TLC.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a succulent plant bearing fleshy, thick, greenish-gray leaves that contain sticky fluid you can use to treat various skin problems. Deemed the “plant of immortality” by ancient Egyptians 6000 years ago, the aloe vera plant–specifically its leaf gel–has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, especially for moisturizing, soothing and healing frostbite, sunburns, insect bites, cold sores and rashes. Pots in which you plant aloe vera should have bottom holes for drainage to prevent overwatering. Aloe vera likes shade, partial sun and full sun.

Dieffenbachia

Many people have discovered the beauty of the easy-to-grow dieffenbachia, an indoor plant offering lush, green and white foliage. Mature dieffenbachia plants can transform typical bedrooms into tropical escapes. Just give your dieffenbachia access to low to medium sunlight, keep soil evenly moist and watch it grow into a gorgeous plant.

Heart-Leaf Philodendrons

A hardy foliage plant with attractive heart-shaped leaves, philodendrons are “trailing” plants that grow long stems with leaves you can trail over bookshelves or windowsills. To grow philodendrons, provide shade to bright light and let the soil dry before you water it again. You can also lace philodendron stems through a small trellis in your bedroom to give the room a true “outdoor” appearance.

Cast-Iron Plant

It’s called the cast-iron plant because it’s a tough, indoor plant that can withstand low light, various temperatures and even low humidity. In fall and winter, you barely need to water it because it lies dormant at this time but keep soil evenly moist during spring and summer. If you like plants but don’t want to mess with them more than a minute or two each day, this is YOUR kind of plant!

Simple Ways to Refresh Your Apartment Home for Spring

Regatta at Lake Lynn Apartment HomeSpring is a time for renewal and sprucing up your living space can be a wonderful way to embrace the growing season. We hope our Regatta at Lake Lynn community members in Raleigh, North Carolina, enjoy these simple ways to refresh your apartment home.

Reduce Collectible Clutter

The spring cleaning topics abound each year. But there’s a significant difference between taking out a stack of old magazines and newspapers and reducing the number of things you deem “collectible.” The fact of the matter is, many of our collected items involve things we are on the fence about keeping or recycling.

In some cases, collections are a mix of really cool vintage items for guests to gaze on and, well, junk. As the saying goes, it’s time to separate the wheat from the chaff and cull down the displayed items to the best of the best. You may want to box a few things up and put them in storage, donate to charity or send to the landfill. The point is to embrace the spaciousness of your lovely living space.

Cables and Cords are Not Useful

At the beginning of the home computer age, folks kept every cable and cord. That’s because they were expensive and sometimes difficult to find in stores. These days, phone-charging cords are so prevalent that there’s no real need to keep more than three. That’s one in the house, one in your vehicle and one as a backup. If you lose one of these items, every convenience store and gas station in North Carolina has a replacement. Computer cables and those for other electronics are no different. That’s why it’s time to rifle through those drawers and closets and donate or dump all those unused cables and cords.

Reorganize Your Living Space

With the windows about to be open to let in fresh spring air, it’s time to take a long look at how your furniture functions. After all, you just had a long winter huddled inside. Furniture can look nice one way and function best in another. Maybe it’s time to take what you learned about relaxing and engaging others in your social space and make some changes.

Things like throwing rugs to center an intimate social space or turning a comfortable seat to capture more natural sunlight are little things you can do to enhance your sense of comfort. The little things do matter.

We hope our Regatta at Lake Lynn community members enjoy these refreshing spring ideas. If you or a friend would like more information about our Raleigh apartments, call us today.

Almond Nuts

Prepping Your Pantry for Spring

Almond NutsWith spring on the way, this is an ideal time to take a look at your pantry and restock it as needed. With the weather getting warmer, you can count on seeing plenty of fresh produce around, which work great in lighter meals. Consider getting your pantry ready for spring by adding these food staples.

Lentils

Lentils offer a lighter alternative to beans. They’re filled with folate, fiber, vitamin B and several other important nutrients, making them a healthy choice for springtime meals. You can cook lentils and season them for a delicious side dish or place them on salads.

Nuts

Nuts provide you with healthy fats to enjoy this spring. You can eat them whole as a snack, or use them as toppings for seasonal spring salads, pestos and steamed vegetables.

Olive Oil

Olive oil, especially fruity olive oil, heightens the flavor of spring vegetables when you add a bit while cooking. Putting some olive oil on grilled vegetables is also a healthier way to enhance their flavor without the saturated fat that butter has.

Mustard

Don’t settle for the usual brands of traditional mustard this spring. Choose high-quality ones that add a tangy flavor, such as spicy brown mustard. These kinds of mustard go well with marinades, potato salads and garden salads.

Rice Noodles

Skip the wheat pasta, and choose rice noodles instead for your springtime meals. These noodles are faster to cook, and they’re not as overly filling as heavier wheat pastas. You can use rice noodles as the main ingredient in side dishes, or make some to have with a salad.

Herbs and Spices

Keep a variety of your favorite herbs and spices around to season your spring meals. Some good choices include rosemary, paprika, cumin and seasonal blends. Having these handy means you don’t have to worry about running out to the store at the last minute.

Dried Fruits

When you’re on the go and can’t have fresh seasonal fruit, grab some dried fruit for snacks instead. Stock your pantry with dried fruits that don’t contain any added sugar.

Our apartments in Raleigh, NC, feature a pantry area that offers plenty of storage space for food items. Please contact us for more details on our community and apartment amenities.

Dog in Car

4 Spring Activities to Do With Your Dog

Dog in CarSpring is an excellent time for going on adventures with your dog. Winter’s cold is finally in your rear-view mirror, but it’s not scorching hot yet, either. Plus the longer days give you more hours to frolic together. Need some ideas? Then check out these four fun activities that the two of you can enjoy together this spring.

Go Hiking

Spring is when nature is putting on one of her best shows. So hit the trails in the woods or one of the nearby beautiful parks, such as Lake Crabtree County Park. This pretty park boasts six miles of trails and a lake. Plus, it’s a bit hilly so you and your pup will get a nice workout during your hike.

Hit the Dog Park

Most dogs love to run free, but it’s not usually safe to let them wander loose. All it takes is for a squirrel to run by and suddenly your dog is off to the races. The solution? A dog park where they can run free with other canines in an enclosed area. If you haven’t found one yet, take the time to do a little research so your pup can enjoy some off-leash fun this spring.

Head to the Beach

North Carolina is home to numerous beaches. Some are dog-friendly all year-round, while others only allow pups during the non-summer months — typically between September 30 and May 1. Spring is a great time to hit the beaches with your dog as the weather is warm, but the crowds are still low.

Go Camping

Your dog will love exploring the wilderness and bedding in a tent with you. It’s a great way to deepen your bond with your pup. Plus, your dog would surely rather be on vacation with you than staying cooped up in a boarding kennel.

Have you and your furry best friend been searching for a new home? Then check out our beautiful and pet-friendly apartments in Raleigh. We have a host of amenities, including two pools and a playground, plus we have a trail where you can walk your pup and a dog park, which is always a sought-after commodity for dog owners. Money Jar

5 Simple Ways to Save Money

Money JarAs you enjoy life in our apartments in Raleigh, keeping costs under control is always a priority. No matter how much money you may make, it’s always smart to trim costs when you can. However, many people hesitate to put a savings plan into action because they fear it will be too complicated. Here’s what you need to know to save money in five simple ways.

1. Cut Down on Extras — Make Coffee in Your Raleigh Apartment

If you buy a coffee at a local coffee shop every day instead of making a cup in your Raleigh apartment, the costs can mount quickly. You’ll spend an average of $4 to $5 for most fancy coffee drinks, and over a month this amounts to at least $100. Make an investment in a home coffee maker. While it costs more in the beginning, you can make delicious gourmet coffee drinks for just pennies.

2. Consider Your Car Insurance Rates

Car insurance rates can constantly change, so it’s best to shop around a few times a year. In many cases, you can save hundreds of dollars a year just by changing to a different provider or by making small changes in your existing policy.

3. Play Money Games

Play money games with yourself to save money painlessly. For example, you can save all your change instead of spending it. Alternatively, you can save all of your one dollar bills or all of your five dollar bills. Keep the money stash going for a few months and you’ll be surprised how much you can save.

4. Make Painless Substitutions

Many generic foods today are identical to their more expensive counterparts. Try swapping out one or two brand name foods for generic ones at a time. If you continue this weekly, you’ll soon notice a big savings in your grocery bills.

5. Consider Cutting Out Cable

Cutting out cable is growing ever more popular. Consider using a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime in its place — you can save hundreds of dollars every year.

Alarm Clock

How to Become a Morning Person

Alarm ClockBeing a so-called “morning” or “evening” person may be part fact and part fiction. But regardless of your predisposition, these are some practical things you can try to be become more of a morning person. We hope these suggestions prove useful for our Regatta at Lake Lynn community members in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Get a Full Night’s Sleep

The amount of sleep each person requires varies. Although eight hours is the commonly understood mark, your needs could run higher or lower. Try determining your sleep needs within a 7- to 9-hour range to start. Once you figure out the sweet spot, determine how long it takes you to doze off and become more regimented about getting your full complement. Some of the immediate benefits may include.

  • Improved memory
  • Improved metabolism
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Improved mood
  • Improved concentration
  • Lower stress levels

Keep in mind, you won’t ever be a true morning person without starting the day fully rested.

Develop a Sleep Ritual

Calculating your sleep needs from bedtime to a morning alarm is unlikely to work. By developing a relaxing pre-bedtime routine, you will be readying your mind and body. It’s important to develop a routine geared toward relaxation. Things such as television, video games, and music can get you amped up. Excitement runs contrary to sleep. Think quiet, subtle, relaxing and even boring. Once established, the routine may grow into a sleep trigger that helps shepherd you into slumber more quickly and efficiently.

Be Consistent

Getting a full night’s sleep goes hand in hand with a consistent one. Starting your ritual at the same time each night can provide the mind and body with predictability and a sense of stability. We often think in terms of consistency in other areas of our lives that include work, relationships, sports and nutrition. That same principle can be even more important when it comes to sleep.

Carpe Diem

Rising fully rested can be only half the battle. What you do in the morning can significantly impact your day. Things such as light exercise, yoga and meditation can be precursors to the remainder of your awake time.

Consider a weekly exercise routine that combines a reasonable number of push-ups, sit-ups or calisthenics such as jumping jacks and running in place. Doing a little each morning can get the blood circulating.

Similarly, mindfulness exercises, meditation and yoga can inform the remainder of your day as well. The mind invigorates the body and vice versa. The key is to seize the day rather than just wallow at the breakfast table drinking way too much coffee.

We hope our Regatta at Lake Lynn community members enjoy these suggestions about becoming a “morning” person. If you or a friend would like more information about our Raleigh apartments, call us today.

Red Tulips

Popular Flowers for Valentine’s Day

Red TulipsValentine’s Day and flowers are joined as closely as the bond between loved ones. This year, consider some of these sometimes overlooked flowers and surprise your significant other. We hope our community members in Raleigh, North Carolina, enjoy these suggestions.

Purple Orchids

There are more than 25,000 species of orchids and upwards of 100,000 different types. They are present on every continent with the exception of Antarctica and were among the most highly regarded flowers in ancient times. In terms of Valentine’s Day, the orchid symbolizes love, beauty, refinement, thoughtfulness and charm. Purple orchids can be very charming.

Sunflowers

These bright yellow beauties are sure to lift your partner’s spirits on this special day. After all, sunflowers emulate the very nature of sunshine. The flower’s history can be traced back to 1,000 B.C. in the Americas and has been cultivated ever since. In terms of the perfect Valentine’s Day offering, sunflowers symbolize loyalty, longevity and adoration, all important things for relationships.

Red Tulips

In many ways, the red tulip is a nice spin on the red rose. It can be a modest change from the traditional flower without going too far afield. The wonderful thing about red tulips is that they are subtle. It’s more along the lines of a comfort flower, yet it is recognized as a “love” offering around the world.

Carnations

In many ways, carnations have gotten a bad rap in terms of romantic flowers. That may be due to their close association with prom night. But if you stop and think about it, doesn’t the prom mark a rite of passage? It also has tremendous romantic implications. You always remember who you went to the senior prom with. Basically, carnations are forever. The light flowers symbolize admiration and the darker tones are expressions of love and affections.

Peonies

Peonies enjoy one of the richest and ancient histories. Legend has it that they are the namesake of Paeon, the physician-god of Mount Olympus. They are a Chinese traditional flower, a standard 12th wedding anniversary gift and the official flower of Indiana. Beyond all that trivia, they are lush, full-bodied blooms that express romance.

Chrysanthemums

Perhaps not as powerfully romantic as others in their class, chrysanthemums enjoy vibrant colors that run from light pinks to deep purples. They are daisy-like and decorative in nature. They symbolize joy and happiness and isn’t that the underlying feeling of Valentine’s Day, after all.

We hope our residents enjoy these Valentine’s Day flower suggestions. If you or a friend would like more information about our Raleigh apartments, call us today.

Peas

Superfood Trends for 2018

PeasIf you’re like most residents of apartments in Raleigh, staying healthy and fit is high on your list of priorities—and naturally, you want to keep current on the latest nutritional information. Fortunately, for those who care about their health, new superfoods are discovered every year.  Following are just four of 2018’s superstar superfoods.

Elderflower

Elderflower tea, juice, and elixir are the stars of 2018’s herbal show due to their stellar anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Traditional medicinal practitioners around the globe have used it for centuries to treat common colds and other respiratory conditions. Evidence exists that using elderflower may result in decreased blood sugar levels. It can also be used as a mouthwash and gargle for those seeking to reduce levels of harmful bacteria in their mouths. However, users are cautioned to use only the flowers and the berries because the twigs, leaves, and roots are known to have toxic properties.

Cassava

Native to subtropical rainforests, cassava roots can be made into flour that provides a wonderful alternative to the gluten-packed flour products on today’s market. Packed with vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and flavonoids, cassava flour can be used to make everything from bread to brownies, and you won’t experience the usual bloating, gas, and general digestive discomfort associated with traditional flour made from processed grains.

Camu Camu

Camu camu grows deep within the Amazon rainforest and is a virtual powerhouse of vitamin C. It’s a sour, small fruit that’s great for staving off seasonal colds. It also contains abundant phytochemicals that work to shore up the immune system, and some users report experiencing general mood enhancement as a result of making camu camu a regular part of their diet.

Peas

That’s right, peas. Your grandmother was right all along. This humble vegetable is finally getting its due as one of the most nutritious things you can pop into your mouth. Peas can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as steamed, boiled, or dried. You can use them as a side dish, toss them in salads, or have them as a snack.
